this one was almost a disaster with the ink wash and markers, just like the previous Nissa & Nora picture!
in this drawing i wanted to play up the differentiation between the two of them, both the physical differences like Nora is skinnier than Nissa, Nissa wears glasses sometimes while Nora sticks with contacts, and the personality differences too. and i liked the idea of Nissa dying her hair but courteously keeping it just a small part so there wouldn't be a risk of the dye getting onto Nora's hair.
they've only been in photographs and mentioned in the comic so far, and they're in a brief part of Wet Moon 6, but they'll have much bigger parts in volume 7.
what made you decide to have conjoined twins characters? Like, what first inspired to have Natalie's sisters be conjoined (and conjoined at the head) as opposed to just identical twins or just general sisters? It's a daring aspect that throws me off, but i respect at the same time. I know you are not opposed to having physically unique characters like Zia who lost her arm and Fern.. i was just wondering since having characters, particularly like this, can pose challenges to the artist (just in technical aspects like framing and angles)...
ReplyDeletei wish i could remember any particular insightful reason besides "i felt like it," haha. i don't know, i made them up way back in 2004 and i can't really remember why i decided to make them conjoined twins or joined at the head, other than that's who i wanted the characters to be, i thought it would be interesting, they looked cute, they're fun to draw, and i hadn't seen any conjoined twin characters in comics (or anywhere) that weren't presented as freaks or somehow related to sideshows/freakshows/the circus, so i wanted to do something better and i guess more respectful.
Deletethey're definitely a challenge to draw, though, yeah! i haven't drawn them that many times, just a couple instances in the first few volumes of the comic, a brief scene in volume 6, and these two illustrations/pin-ups here, so i haven't had to fully dive into figuring out how they move and everything yet. they'll have bigger roles in volume 7 so i gotta get on that! it'll be difficult but i enjoy a challenge, it'll be worth it. :)
I think this is my favourite piece you've ever done! Sorry Trilby, i think Nissa is my new favourite character.
ReplyDeleteaw, thank you so much!!
Deletebut poor Trilby! XD
