Wet Moon 6 page 7

MEANWHILE AGAIN!! the mystery of Fern deepens!!! >:D and what is behind that little square door on the slanted ceiling?! drawing Fern's mansion is tough, especially in these dimly-lit scenes, i've never felt confident about my lighting/shadows so i'm never sure how shadowy to make the lighting look or how much black to spot. i had harsher shadows on this originally but it looked weird and made the mood all wrong, so i tried to stylize it a bit while still trying to get across that it was a dimly-lit hallway. i think my favorite thing about this page is that Cleo's shadow in panel 3 is a circle.

looking back on this page now i find it slightly confusing, like is it totally clear that Cleo is being startled while coming out of that doorway right as Malady passes by? i've done so many comic pages at this point in my career, you'd think i'd have all the little technical aspects figured out by now!

  1. Looks beautiful! *LOVE* Cleo's spider nightgown. I am going to hole up in my room like a hermit when I finally have this book in my hands. And yes, I totally understood that Cleo was startled. :)

Malady, Zia, Penny... arrgh, Ross, why do I like your drama-rama characters so much???

    1. thank you!! took me a while to figure out Cleo's nightgown, it seems like most nightgowns would be plain without any prints/images, but i figured Cleo likes to go all the way in all areas of life. XD

  2. Sweet page! I wasn't sure if Cleo was supposed to be startled or if she just wasn't expecting to meet up with Malady face-to-face. Either way, it works. Cleo just doesn't look totally freaked... maybe a little uneasy instead.

    1. either startled or not expecting to run into Malady works, either are fine. she's not like "AAAAGH!" startled but didn't expect anyone to be there.

  4. No, you did fine. I think dealing with lighting by mood is better rather than trying to light spaces literally. I didn't realize how much I actually missed Cleo until she popped out of that door!

    GOOD TO SEE YOU, CLEO!

  5. i think it's quite clear that malady has surprised cleo; also, your shadows are totally convincing and i think that anyone who questions their placement is staring a little too hard and should get a hobby. finally, that door on the slanted ceiling panel is definitely piquing my interest.

  6. and what is behind that little square door on the slanted ceiling?!

Utility access, probably. A lot of really old houses that were built before electricity an indoor plumbing don't have the space to run wiring and pipes inside the walls, so when they were updated, they put them in corners and covered them up. And of course you still have to be able to get to them in an emergency, hence the tiny door.

    1. ha! but that's the most boring answer ever, that's the best you could come up with?! i designed Fern's house and i say you're wrong!!! ;)

    2. Also, she's got a tiny diorama there of all the equipment in use, and the key hangs from the very suspension bar we saw her on several pages later. The last electrician who had to work in that old house fell off his ladder in shock and still walks with a limp to this very day!
