Wet Moon 6 page 26

i think i've talked about this before elsewhere but sometimes i feel like i've painted myself into a corner with Fern. she has all these mysteries around her and there have been some reveals like her talking about her family in volume 2 or the earlier scene in this volume, but i get the sense that at this point any further reveals about who she is or where she came from or what she's doing will never live up to what readers likely have in their imaginations. it'll probably just disappoint in an "oh. that's it?" way.

there is more to reveal about her (whether it's interesting or not is another thing, heh) so i should probably just say screw it and do it anyway, but sometimes i wonder if leaving things mysterious is the best way to go, but then i also wonder if not providing any real answers is a jerk move. back in the early books i didn't think much of it, i had all the time in the world, i'll get to it and the mysterious stuff is part of the comic, but now that i'm outlining the final few books in the series, it's looming over me to really figure out how much to reveal and and how much to leave unanswered.

  1. Oh my, yes, that must be the hardest part. I remember watching the X-Files ages ago, and the more questions were answered, the less I liked the series...

Funnily enough, I don't think of Fern as such a mysterious character. By this point, I thought I'd pretty much figured her out (I have no idea why Penny thinks there's some kind of secret to uncover). She was born in a very rich family, has a lot of disabilities, likes bondage and possibly other forms of BDSM, is a bit socially awkward, has a crush on Penny, and Malady gave her a kidney, and... that's about it ?

I'm much more curious about that FBI agent with a monkey on his shoulder, or, of course, Unknown, or the Alien Ghost, or even the giant boar...

    1. i think people are most curious about Fern going into the swamp at night, that's what i get asked a lot and what likely adds a lot to the mystery. :)

  2. I love the highlights in panel 3.

Have we seen Fern sleep upside down before? I CAN'T REMEMBER!

...that is what she's doing, right?

  3. Fern is my favorite character in the series, though I like the mystery bits I am really curious to learn more about her. She's just so fasinating c:

I can't help but wonder though what she does with these strange nightly rituals. I almost feel like it's a sort of meditation for her, like hanging upside down channels some sort of energy for her, or maybe she just likes to hang upside down like a bat, or maybe she is a vampire or transforms into something much more wicked and that's what the FBI is investigating. HMMM...

  4. please reveal everything! haha. i have no theories or expectations about fern. I love her mystery but if after wet moon ends and there's no more info about her, i think i would be upset after a while, after a few more re-readings, wishing i knew more about her or that she hadn't just been this unsolved mystery i guess....but i trust your storytelling!

  5. How long do you think the series will be? how many volumes? Btw ain't it a bit frustrating writing stories in the slow pace it means to making comics? I mean, it has gone like eight yers in reality but the books are set around a few months or something? (I'm not sure cause I haven't gotten myself to by more books than 1 and 2 yet, I will eventuallt yet). I mean, myself attepmting to write, I many times just wanna rush to the best parts, and I can imagine it's kinda like that when you acutally write too, and fans are talking about what they like and have theories and stuff, while you yourself know what will happen in eight years...and yeah, do you know how your series will end when you write the first issue/volume or do it grow with time? (sorry for a too long post in too bad english)

    1. i thought i replied to this!! sorry, Elias! Wet Moon will probably be 8 volumes. the books kind of have what people call a 'floating timeline' in that even though only a few months pass in the story, it's never stated when it takes place and is still vaguely contemporary. as i've gone on, though, with the characters still using flip phones and stuff like that, in my head i've capped it at taking place in 2008, but i doubt i'll ever mention that in the comic.

i don't know everything that will happen, i make a lot of it up as i go along. if i do plan something that far ahead, oftentimes it changes because as i get older my interests change and i change as a person, so i'm not always going to like something i made up 5 years ago. in those cases i just discard ideas or change them.
